How to Care for you Leather
Share
To care for a leather vest, wipe it with a soft, damp cloth after each use, condition it every few months with a specialized leather conditioner, and store it on a wide hanger in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Avoid using harsh chemicals, excessive moisture, or heat, and allow any wetness to air-dry naturally. For specific stains, try baking soda for grease or cornstarch, letting it sit before gently wiping it off.
Cleaning
- Dust and grime: After wearing, wipe the vest with a clean, soft microfiber cloth to remove dust, dirt, and any grime.
- Damp cloth cleaning: For general cleaning, use a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid soaking the leather.
Stain removal:Grease/Oil: Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda or cornstarch on the stain, let it sit for a few hours, then gently brush or wipe it off.General stains: Use a specialized leather cleaner, applying it to the cloth first, not directly to the leather.
Conditioning
- Apply conditioner: Every few months, especially if exposed to sun and rain, apply a small amount of leather conditioner or oil to keep the leather supple and prevent cracking.
- Test first: Always test the conditioner on an inconspicuous area of the vest to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration.
- Allow to dry: Let the conditioner sit and soak into the leather, allowing it to dry thoroughly, perhaps overnight.
- Buff: Once dry, buff the leather with a clean, dry cloth to remove any excess product and restore its shine.
Storage and Protection
- Storage: Hang the vest on a wide, sturdy hanger to maintain its shape.
- Environment: Store the vest in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources like radiators.
- Avoid plastic: Do not store leather in plastic bags, as this can damage the material.
- Protection: Consider a leather protectant spray to offer protection against UV rays and water damage.
